A 44-year-old Pacifica man accused of trying to bring a loaded handgun to his convicted burglar son’s criminal arraignment on new assault charges pleaded not guilty Tuesday at his own felony court appearance.
Frank Luis Turney is charged with a single count of bringing a weapon in a courthouse. Turney appeared in court Tuesday with his retained attorney and pleaded not guilty. He returns to court Nov. 7 for a Superior Court review conference and Nov. 29 for a preliminary hearing.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Turney Sept. 19 after the metal detector at 400 County Government Center in Redwood City — the location of the southern courthouses — alerted security personnel to a loaded handgun on his person.
His only prior conviction in San Mateo County was in Pacifica 14 years ago, before the court computer system logged the nature of the crime.
Turney was at the courthouse for the Superior Court arraignment of his son John Turney who is charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon and violating probation. The son was on felony probation for a 2007 second-degree burglary when he was arrested for allegedly possessing stolen property. On Aug. 20, Pacifica police arrested Turney again after he allegedly attacked the man he believed led to his arrest in the previous case. Turney reportedly smashed a beer bottle over the man’s head and fled. As Turney ran off, he yelled at the victim that he “had more coming for what he had done,” according to the District Attorney’s Office.
John Turney remains in custody in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Frank Turney, however, posted $50,000 bail shortly after arrest and is free from custody.
