Moss Beach man arrested for stabbing girlfriend in the neck

Published on 12/3/2010

A Coastside woman was rushed to the hospital Thursday evening for emergency surgery after her neck was cut by her boyfriend, police said.

The 55-year-old woman called 911 about 4:45 p.m. to report that her boyfriend, later identified as David John Vanalstine, 56, had stabbed her in their mobile home in the 100 block of Barranca Street, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from her injuries.

After being treated at a hospital for a medical condition, Vanalstine was booked late Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder and felony domestic violence, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe and the sheriff's office.

He is being held in the San Mateo County Jail without bail.

When deputies arrived at the home in Pillar Point Estates, they found the victim outside on the ground and discovered Vanalstine inside the residence. Officers also found an "edged weapon," but the sheriff's office declined to state if it was a knife. Police have not said what sparked the confrontation.

The couple have been living together in the home for several years, and there is a history of police being called to that address, the sheriff's office said. The incident is still under investigation.

If charges are filed, Vanalstine is due in court Monday afternoon, Wagstaffe said.
