Mountain lion spotted

Published on 11/27/2010

A mountain lion was spotted in Portola Valley late Wednesday night, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The animal was seen at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Los Trancos and Alpine roads, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office recommends that people keep a close eye on small children and avoid walking or hiking when the animals are most active — dawn, dusk and nighttime.
People who see mountain lions should not run, but instead face the cougar, make noise, try to look bigger by waving their arms and throw rocks or other objects at it.
Mountain lions will usually try to avoid confrontation, according to the sheriff’s office.
