Man dies after being struck by train

Published on 11/27/2010

A male pedestrian was struck by a train in Burlingame Friday morning, causing the 10th death this year on the Caltrain right of way.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office says the man has been identified, but his name will not be released until officials can contact his relatives.

The man apparently trespassed onto the tracks at the Morrell Avenue pedestrian crossing, which has gates, lights and bells to notify pedestrians of approaching trains.

The northbound train No. 425 struck the man at approximately 10:05 a.m.

The crossing is located between the Burlingame and Broadway stations. Authorities weren’t certain why the man was on the tracks. The train, which had about 400 passengers on board, was stopped at the scene for more than an hour, according to Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn.

Trains in both directions ran at reduced speed on the southbound track while authorities conducted an investigation into the death on the northbound track. Both tracks reopened and regular service resumed around 11:30 a.m., Dunn said.

The fatality is the 10th this year and the 19th since 2009 on Caltrain tracks, according to Dunn.
