The 21st annual Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, a display of 2,000 magnificent driving, flying and working machines from the past century, will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 1 at the Half Moon Bay Airport.
Among the highlights this year is a Nike Hercules surface-to-air missile, a powerful weapon developed during the Cold War. A custom-built motorcycle dubbed "Dream Big," which weighs 6,500 pounds and stands 11 feet tall, is another must-see machine.
Attendees can get a close-up look at a spectacular variety of cars, fire engines, buses, motorcycles, trucks, antique engines and tractors, historic military aircraft and a special "Green Machines" display.
Flyovers will take place during the show, and rides will be offered in everything from helicopters and vintage biplanes to a P-51 Mustang, at costs ranging from $40 to $600. There will also be food and live music.
Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for seniors and youths 11 to 17, and free for children 10 and younger. Tickets must be purchased at the gate. To learn more, call 650-726-2328 or visit www.miramarevents.com. The airport is located on Highway 1, about five miles north of Highway 92. Proceeds benefit the Coastside Adult Day Health Center.
Motorcycle benefit
The seventh annual Redwood City Poker Run motorcycle ride -- a fundraiser for the San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League, Redwood City Police Activities League and Redwood City After School Sports -- will be held May 14.
These three organizations serve thousands of children each year with athletic, educational and cultural after-school programs.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the ride starts at 10 a.m. at Dudley Perkins Company Harley-Davidson & Buell, 333 Corey Way in South San Francisco. The ride ends at 1:30 p.m. at Sparky's Hot Rod Garage, 975 Industrial Road in San Carlos, with a barbecue, music and a drawing for prizes.
"This is a great opportunity for motorcycle riders to ride along with police motorcycle officers through the scenic coast of San Mateo County," Alpio Barbara, coordinator of the event, said in an email.
Last year, 275 motorcyclists participated and raised nearly $30,000. With the economic crisis, many children in the county need the community's help more than ever.
DPR Construction, Redwood General Tire Pros and the Golden Gate Harley Owners Group Chapter are key sponsors of the event.
Register before April 29 for $25 per motorcycle ($30 with a second rider). After April 29, registration is $30 per motorcycle ($35 with second rider). For the first 250 participants, the entry fee includes a special ride T-shirt, a patch and lunch.

Help clean up creek
Redwood City and its Pride and Beautification Committee, in partnership with Save the Bay, will hold an annual Spring Cleanup Day on Saturday, with special emphasis on Redwood Creek.
Last year, Save the Bay invited the public to vote for one of seven trash hot spots for the nonprofit to "adopt" for volunteer cleanups in 2011. Redwood Creek garnered nearly 775 votes. This creek cleanup is the second of four that Save the Bay and its volunteers will perform this year.
Volunteers of all ages will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the city's public works building at 1400 Broadway near Woodside Road for a complimentary continental breakfast.
They will then head out to various cleanup areas, including Redwood Creek. At noon, all volunteers will enjoy a free "thank you" barbecue lunch.
RSVPs are not required. However, volunteers can sign up in advance at www.savesfbay.org/volunteer.
Other event sponsors of the event include San Mateo Credit Union, Recology San Mateo County, Sims Metal Management, Shinnyo-En and Keep California Beautiful.
Recology is also sponsoring a compost giveaway this coming weekend from 9 a.m. Saturday until 3 p.m. Sunday at the Public Works Services parking lot. Redwood City residents can load up to 1 cubic yard of free compost, the equivalent of about three full garbage cans, on a first-come, first-served basis.
