Published on 7/29/2010

A Redwood City man is in custody after ramming a police car and running into a tree with a stolen car yesterday afternoon.

At approximately 12:48 p.m., representatives from the San Mateo County Vehicle Theft Task Force and the Redwood City Police Department were conducting a stolen vehicle surveillance detail in the 2300 block of Cheshire Way in Redwood City when Justin Ralph Mitchell, 22, broke into a car and prepared to drive away. A marked Redwood City police car arrived and Mitchell is alleged to have intentionally rammed it along with the task force surveillance car. He kept driving and turned into a nearby cul-de-sac where he crashed into a gate in the 400 block of Oakridge, according to police.

One Redwood City police officer complained of pain as a result of the collision and was treated and released at an area hospital. Mitchell was taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained during the incident. He is currently under arrest for vehicle theft, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, violation of parole and narcotics-related violations, according to police.
